Getting started and materials list

Let's get started! I have provided you with printable pdfs of my original lion painting and a simple sketch that you can use. I recommend printing the painting images with the black and white draft setting of your printer to save on ink.

The sketch is yours to use if you would like a starting point for your own painting. I'm going to teach you how to use it to follow your own creative voice and create your OWN unique masterpiece!

You can use tracing paper to transfer the sketch to your substrate or you can even "flip" the image and then print it to transfer it directly from the photo copy. There are many tutorials online that show you how to do this so I will not cover it here.

What you will need:

  • A surface to paint on. We can get creative with this. If you don't have a canvas you can use sketch paper and prep the surface with some acrylic white paint. (You do not want to apply paint to unprepared paper) Or maybe you have a small piece of wood or board you would like to use? Again, make sure you prep by applying acrylic white paint. I recommend at least 2 coats.
  • Painting materials such as acrylic paint, craft paint, you can even use oil pastels, colored markers, colored pencils and crayons
  • Found materials such as old magazines or books, scrap book papers and fabric to add a fun collage element to your artwork
  • Craft glue, glue sticks or acrylic medium to apply collage elements if you will using them
  • Mark making materials such as a card board paper towel roll, bottle caps of various sizes, stencils, foam brushes, etc.
  • Brushes if you are using paint, fingers are great too!
  • Old clothing or a smock in case the paint gets on you (it happens)

I will be showing you how you can create your Lion on Mixed Media Paper. Feel free to use canvas, board or even wood as your substrate.

Anything you use will need to be prepared with at least 2 coats of gesso or acrylic white paint.

Suggested Supplies:

  • Something to paint on: Mixed media paper, Canvas, Art board, Gessoed wood, etc
  • Collage materials: Magazines, fabric, scrapbooking papers
  • Paint brushes: A variety of styles, large, flat, round and fine
  • Paint: Acrylic paint is recommended. A good, inexpensive acrylic paint is Liquitex brand. Craft paint can also be used
  • Markers and colored pencils are optional
  • Found Items: Paper towel roll, bottle caps, etc
  • Paint palette: Styrofoam plates
  • A cup of water for cleaning paint off of your brushes
